This may have been the orgional O.B. boat I ran in 1968[?] in the Columba ,S.C. LAKE MURRY MARATHON- 3 hours? put on by jeff hunt the S.C. CAT, tractor distributor. 1drove my 17', Colcock 225 hydroplane & lead the first hour until the sponsons fell off again. [ ie. gold coat marsthon 8 th o.a. 1967-?] 220 boats! Lake Murry was choppy, I took over one of hunts other boats in the race a 16' Rayson Craft with two 70 hp motors, ran great, handled well moved into top 5, i think. None of Hunts other boats [4] finished, Bright Steven, Eastover,S.C. did in his 17' SK / APBA boat. I would live to buy & restore one of these boats as I went to college at U.S.C.[ they still did not realized they came in SECOND in the Civil War!] and raced for Holman & Moody's boat group. The next year i purchased a Lauterbach 225 hydro & won a bunch of races before 4 flips turned my parents off. In 1972 Istarted buying old alloy racing ferraris and still run SVRA, vintage& historic races. 100mph in a small boat is like 190 in my LeMans winning 512 BBLM FERRARI. 81 LeMans 5th O.A. IMSA class winner / TIDE ch,pozzi ferrari france. The Rayson Craft & hydroplanes are actually more fun & exciting.
i do not believe that this is a hollman/moody boat. lee holmann told me that they only rigged 6 raysoncrafts with the volvo i/o setup. five were the larger ski boats with 302 motors and the volvo outdrive. the sixth was a 15' hull like this one. they rigged it with the then new 351 and volvo outdrive. it was sold to a person in canton ohio. from there it went to the detroit area and then to illinois. several years ago i bought it on evilbay and it is now back in ohio. all of the h/m branded hardware came with the hull including the motor mounts, exhaust manifolds, waterpump cover, thermostat housing, and the bellhousing. with the h/m tags. the hull was originally white with light mettalic blue trim and lee holman confirmed that. lee said that it was one of one and since i can track the ownership back to the person in canton ohio,i think i have the genuine h/m rigged hull. skipp
Skipp thanks for the info very interesting! My guess based on your info is maybe a marina or local builder used H&M parts to build a hull similar to the one H&M built in house. Many of these Rayson-Crafts left the factory in different stages of completion or as bare hulls to be rigged as desired, so given the racing reputation of H&M in the day and the desire to compete, it seems logical someone used H&M as their source for the marine parts on a similar hull. I have also heard H&M supplied several engines to Rayson-Craft, I wonder if it is possible they built a similar boat in CA and it ended up in Carolina... Maybe Jeremy got some of the history from the previous owners.
Again, thanks for the info and I sure hope you'll share some pictures of your boat!
Mike
mike, lee holman explaned to me that rudy got behind on his engine bill and as a partial payment sent 6 hulls to h/m. five were the 18 ft and one was the 16 ft. lee said that v-drives were not very popular in the area,at that time, and they were familiar with the volvo outdrives. h/m did the rigging on the donzi sweet sixteens,so they modified the transom of these six hulls to accept the volvo drive. h/m,being the center of ford performance in the 60's,their equipment was popular and readily available to the performance enthusiast. it can be found in many surviving boats of the period, but according to lee only six new raysoncraft hulls were completely rigged in house and sold by h/m. in my mind,a h/m boat is a boat rigged by h/m. a boat rigged by someone else using h/m parts is a boat equiped with h/m parts.
That's the story I have heard as well with the engines/hulls being exchanged. Dave Austin knows of another of these H&M boats in the area, likely an 18' but maybe he can confirm that. Also, maybe Jeremy can measure this hull now that he has it. I have heard of many Rayson-Crafts being titled as one length and actually measuring a different length. I just posted the info that was in the ad, so it could be wrong. Again, great info thanks for sharing Skipp!
I think H&M also built/rigged a boat similar to the Donzi sweet 16, Vance hull maybe?
Hello everyone. My name is Jeremy Boughman. I am the lucky new owner of this boat. I also have another 16' 1968 Rayson Craft. That boat is absolutely a Holman Moody boat. I have the original bill of sell and spec sheet on it and the original Berkeley jet pump with matching serial number to that Holman Moody paperwork.
I have met Lee Holman a while back, after I got the jet drive 16'. I don't remember all the details, but I was told the same as some of you guys that they were given bare hulls in exchange for bill payment.
As far as how many and which hulls, I am unsure. This boat and my 16' jet are the same hull. These are actually originally the 16 outboard hull, which is why my jet drive has an overly thick transom for a jet. I know that Holman Moody put the Berkeley jet in mine. As far as this one, I believe that it may have been rigged by Holman Moody with the Volvo, but cannot say for sure. It has the same Volvo drive they used, same hardware, gauges and dash.
I am not sure what my plans are for this one. But my jet drive will be restored to period correct original, using as many original parts as possible.
